Hi I recently started doing paid websites for people.
I very new to the whole thing and it just began by doing a site for
a friend but through word of mouth ive gotten a few more to do.

Im wondering whats the design management process for site i do in the future.

I am going to develop sites in wordpress so I was thinking of developing the
website in my own hosting account under a test domain name (eg. create a sub domain of my personal porfolio domain)
And when the client is happy with the site and has paid, I would transfer the site to their hosting account under there desired domain name.
Im wondering is this good practice? (and would if be difficult to transfer a wordpress site between hosting accounts?)

I've heard I might need to reinstall any wordpress themes after the transfer.
Does this mean I would have to redo any customisation done on the theme prior to the transfer?

Any advice appreciated, thanks in advance.

If you just doing theme development then you could just install wordpress on there hosting service then once you've got the theme finished just copy via ftp over to their wp-content/themes directory and activate the theme there. As long as the theme doesn't write anything to the database like my theme does then you'd need to copy the fields from the database to their database.

The idea of doing your development in a sub domain is a good idea.

Thanks for your reply.

Sorry if I am unclear I am very new to wordpress and a bit of a novice to be truthful.

I will not be doing theme development myself.
I was thinking of using your theme and maybe editing it with the appearance options
you provide in the dashboard and maybe slight editing to the CSS.

So is it possible to transfer the your theme with the updates to it i have done
for my hosting account to another hosting account.

Or would I have to install your theme again in my clients account and redo all the customisation of appearence settings and CSS.

Sorry for bothering you, and i feel a bit guilty asking you all these questions as i havnt
donated yet but I promise to donate as soon as I get a site live with your theme.

Thanks again,
Andy

No bother at all, I see what your asking now. As it stands now if you do the customizing on your site, you will need to copy two fields from the wp_options table (assuming wp is your database prefix) you'll need to copy the techozoic_activation_check and techozoic_options fields. Then you'll need to import them into the clients database. For some of the smaller sites it would probably be quicker to install and configure on the clients site.

I have also been thinking about adding a way to backup and restore the theme options. I'll look and see how much time this will take and let you know. This would make it easier for you.

It looks like I've got the export/import process finished for in time for the next version. I'll be doing some more testing but should be able to get it released at the end of this week.
