Hi Jeremy,

My site loads very slow. This holds true no matter what type of connection I use. So I think the problem is with the site itself. I had a tech from the host outfit look and his response was:

"When I researched your website's source code, I found that it was making calls to no fewer than 3 external .CSS file and no fewer than 8 external .JS files. This causes latency opening the site because the browser must download and process all 14 of those files before it even begins to render your site. In order to allow your site run more quickly you'll want to combine those into one Cascading Style Sheet and one external Javascript."

First I'm not sure his analysis is correct, and second if true, I'm not sure how to fix it.

The Front Burner

Any ideas?

I noticed the load time when looking at your site as well. It's very true that multiple calls to external files will slow down a page loading, Techozoic is only make 3 calls to js files and 1 call to css file. The js files are for the cufon font replacement script and are fairly small, and the dropdown menu javascript. The rest of the calls are coming from plugins you have installed.

Also the home page is very large. Since your showing the full text of all the posts you might consider limiting the number of posts show per page to 4-5 to help speed up page loads. The mysql timer is also showing it's taking 3 seconds to run all the queries for the home page. This will also cause major lag as the page won't even start loading until the queries are done.

Another thing to look at is installing one of the many caching plugins for wordpress. I've used WP-Super Cache for a while, but now I use W3 Total Cache and it does a very good job. You can also set it up to minify and combine js and css files.

Thanks Jeremy,
I installed W3 Total Cache. And I enabled all options except dbug and file locking.

It throws up and error that reads:
"Content Delivery Network Error: The "Replace default hostname with" field must be populated. Enter the hostname of your CDN provider. This is the hostname you would enter into your address bar in order to view objects in your browser."

I'm not sure where this field (Replace default hostname with) lives. (And, if it located, it is not clear what I would put in there, since I have no mirrors.) I have the CDN option for W3 TC set to Self-hosted/File Transfer Protocol Upload, since I have not purchased space at any of the other options. Should I create a dir/folder for W3 to write the cache in? And if so where would I specify that URL to the folder.

Sorry to be so in the dark on this, but I really want to get the load times up. I did limit the home page to 5 posts, and all posts except the top one now have jumps (read more…) I also killed the Techozoic drop down menu option (and reworked the one drop down menu.) But that really didn't seem to shorten the load time.

Unless you have a CDN Content Delivery Network like Amazons A3 you wont use that field. The settings I use are Page Cache, Database Cache, and Browser Cache. These settings work very well for me. You also need to talk to your host about your MySQL server it took 14 seconds to complete the queries, much longer than necessary. If you would like I can give you a hand looking at your site further. Let me know if you'd like me to help you further and I will contact you through email.

Sent a note to you off list. But…

Some hours ago I accessed my site. Almost 15 sec load time, and 14 sec SQL db time. Did not do anything. A N D, a short while ago I tried to access the site again. I say tried… Rec'd a 403 Access Forbidden. Called the host tech support. He disabled (by adding an underscore to the name) the HTaccess file. The site was once again accessible. Now mind you, I did nothing between it working some hours ago, and then getting the 403 error. So I deactivated W3 Total Cache. And… load times went down to 6 secs and SQL went from 14 secs to 1.4 secs. Well, I'm not ready to blame W3 TC yet(however, there are some threads on the W3 TC forum about total db loss) Most likely the problem came from how I set the options. But still that is pretty drastic. From 403 to quicker load when I turned it off.

I've registered for you site, I'm still seeing 6-7 mysql times and very slow load times. Once you let me know I'll take a look around and see if it's something in wordpress or your hosting provider.
