Figured I should make a post considering it’s Leap Day on it only comes around every 4 years.
Important VMWare Security Exploit
Core Security has the full report but if your using VMWare Workstation, Player, or ACE on Windows there is a security exploit in the shared folders feature that allows a traversing of folders not being shared. According to VMWare until a patch is release there is this workaround.
To disable shared folders in the Global settings:
- From the VMware product’s menu, choose Edit > Preferences.
- In the Workspace tab, under Virtual Machines, deselect the checkbox for Enable all shared folders by default.
To disable shared folders for the individual virtual machine settings:
- From the VMware product’s menu, choose VM > Settings.
- In the Options tab, select Shared Folders and Disable.
Encyclopedia of Life – Now Online
The encyclopedia of Life that I wrote about some time ago, has just brought it’s first 30,000 pages online. The goal of the project which is slated to last 10 years is to catalog the entire earths known living species, all 1.8 million. Though 30,000 pages are now up only a handful a fully complete and approved by scientists, the rest serving as placeholders that haven’t been authenticated by scientists yet. You can see the list of exemplar pages as they call them, that are fully approved, here. Later on this year the site will be opened to the public for contributing different materials to be incorporated into the project.
Network Solutions Class Action Suit

Shady business practices abound at Network Solutions. The domain registrar is being accused of ‘front-running’. What happens is when someone goes to the Network Solutions site and searches for the availability of a domain name Network Solutions immediately registered the name for itself. Then the company forces the user to pay outrageous fees to buy the name from them. One client in the suit said $34.99 when the same domain elsewhere would have been $9.99. For anyone who’s been burned by this practice this is welcome news. The original filer of the suit also claims that ICANN is in on the deal as well.
