Have you “Googled” yourself, I have

google
Apparently so has at least half of the rest of the users on the internet.

As more of everyone’s lives are taking place online the amount of personal information online is also growing. With the explosion of social websites, such as myspace and facebook, more people are starting to be concerned as to what they online identity looks like. Therefore 47% of internet users have searched for their name in a search engine. Of those that have “googled” their name only 3% do it regularly, 22% search occasionally, and 74% have searched at least once. I have to admit I fall in the 22%. Something that I didn’t think about was how much information can be found out about a person online, and how they themselves have divulged. A third of those “googlers” say that telephone numbers, addresses including email, employer information can all be found by a simple search. Talk about a stalkers delight.

From ComputerWorld

  • The Worried by the Wayside: This group, which comprises 18% of Internet users, are anxious about the information that is available about them online but don’t do anything to limit that information.
  • The Unfazed and Inactive: Forty-three percent of online adults don’t worry about the availability of their personal information online and don’t take steps to limit that information.

Stories from a Data Recovery Firm

Or Stupid people should own electronics.

Ontrack data recovery tells stories of the unusual and usually stupid ways people break stuff. Everything from a photographer spray insecticide inside his computer because of an ant infestation, to a scientist drilling a hole in his hard drive and pouring oil to stop a squeak in his computer. I thought scientist were supposed to be smart, I guess not. Then there’s the woman who washed a usd drive, I have to admit I’ve washed and dried the same usb drive not once but twice and it still works to this day. Then there’s the professional wedding photographer who overwrote someone’s wedding with another couples.

Google Gdrive

While Google has been ever increasing it’s Gmail capacity, Microsoft overtook them with their upgrade to their Live email services brand. But Google is looking to one up Microsoft this time. Google is getting ready to launch their G drive as some call it, a free online storage space. Although Microsoft already launched a service like this called Skydrive, it only has a 500MB capacity. Windows XP Service Pack 3

ms_winxp.gifIt seems that with XP’s newest service pack won’t only be a bug fix/patch release but will actually help performance. Using an Office benchmarking tool the Devil Mountain Software group have shown the new Service Pack to have as much as a 10% boost over Service Pack 2 and over twice as fast of the same test under Vista. One more reason to stick with trusty old XP a little longer. Just goes to prove that Vista’s biggest competitor is XP itself.
