Firefox 4 Mockups

firefox-logoMozilla has starting thinking about Firefox 4 and with these mock ups have starting throwing ideas around. There are two different versions as of now, tabs below address bar and one with the tabs above the address bar. Another thing their showing off is a combo refresh/go/stop button, where depending on what’s being done in the browser the button changes.

Mozilla Moving Away From Tabs

Mozilla the company behind Firefox thinks that the tabbed interface it’s so famous for is reaching the end of it’s lifespan. So they’re launching a design competition to come up with the next big thing in browsers.

Tabs worked well on slow machines on a thin Internet, where ten browser sessions were “many browser sessions”. Today, 20+ parallel sessions are quite common; the browser is more of an operating system than a data display application; we use it to manage the web as a shared hard drive.
– Mozilla Labs

One interesting idea is already floating around from Mozilla Labs, having the tabs on the side instead of the top.

Microsoft’s Browser Slipping Market Share

IE has been losing market share for a long time but in the last three months it’s dropped nearly a percentage point a month. IE has dropped from %69.77 in November to %67.55 in January. Firefox grew from %20.78 to %21.53 in the same time. Safari and Chrome have also enjoyed good growth in the past few months. It looks like consumers are finally get wise to Microsoft and realizing their is an alternative either in browser or OS all together.

Firefox 3 Beta 4

firefox-logo.png I’ve been testing the latest betas of Firefox for awhile now and Firefox 3 is shaping up to be very nice in my opinion. The biggest thing is the Mozilla team seem to have started plugging some of the memory leaks. Just my rudimentary test but after having both version open for two minutes and surfing the same few pages the memory usage of Firefox 2.0.0.12 is over 63 Mb and was still climbing when I stopped. While Firefox 3 the usage hovered around 55 Mb at the end and was steady. With some basic calculations thats over an 80% decrease (please don’t hold me to these numbers just very basic tests).

Some of the new features are very nice as well. My favorite being the adaptive autocomplete address bar. What this does is based on your usage patterns of the sites you visit the most and sites you visited recently and of course by letters your typing, it shows you the most relevant sites in the autocomplete menu. Also another nice thing is the ability to save your current tab layout when you quit. So when you come back to browsing everything is just how you left it.
