ArsTechnica Review of Windows 7

ArsTechnica has a rather extensive review of Windows 7, including the new taskbar, window management, and improvements to explorer and the control panel.

Windows 7 Beta

LogoMicrosoft’s newest version of Windows is in public beta and I’ve decided to have a look at it. I’ve installed in it a Virtual Machine on Sun’x VirtualBox. It looks like it doesn’t work on Vmware Server less than version 2.

The install process was very simple, insert the disk and click install and wait. After it copies all files it restarts and then asks the standard questions about time, username, password, serial key, and automatic updates. After that you will be greeted by the new desktop. The first thing you’ll notice is the taskbar is cleaner and when you open programs it displays icons instead of names of the programs, then you hover over the icons to see a preview of the window. Although the Aero interface wasn’t available in the virtual machine it is still part of 7.

I’ve very limited experience with Vista but this version of Windows seems like it fixed some of the problems with Vista and made other improvements along the way. I took a few screenshots of the install screen and of the desktop.

Google Chrome 1.0

Google Chrome Google Chrome is no longer beta, yes you heard right a Google product that isn’t beta. After only being beta for 3 and 1/2 months Google removed the beta tag with the release of 1.0 Thursday. It appears that Google has been busy improving their browser, it’s now 1.4 times faster processing JavaScript. Many popular plugins are also said to run faster. Another area of improvement was with the bookmark management, this was a sore area with some users who like to export and organize their bookmarks which now they can. The privacy options have also been improved.

WordPress 2.7 Released

Version 2.7 of WordPress has been released. I’ve been using the beta’s for quite some time, and I must say that I really like this version. There has been alot of dicussion about the new interface but I think it works great.

Sun’s VirtualBox

Does this look strange to you, it should but thanks to Sun’s VirualBox you can accomplish this. What is this you ask? Well it’s running a virtual machine in seamless mode, one of VirtualBox’s features. What does this matter though. Well instead of having to constantly switch back and forth between a virtual machine and your host machine when doing testing you have easy access to both. I’ve uploaded a few screenshots to show what I mean.
